Facebook: A Cave.

June 11, 2013

This week news broke of some interesting backdoors on Facebook, Apple, and Google where the keys seem to be held by some very secretive groups of people. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you need to pull your head out of the sand.

This comes just a few updates after I integrated this site with Facebook. The only reason I did integrate this site with Facebook was to try and update my group of friends through channels that they already understood and used frequently.

However, with this news, I wonder if it really is the best solution to the problem of staying in touch with people through minimal effort on everyones part.

Facebook has become the least common denominator in this regard. It reeks of a strange kind of greed for information that seems to satisfy some deep urge in the human psyche to stay in contact while not REALLY staying on contact at all. Personal has become impersonal so much so that I, at least, am really questioning why we haven’t built anything more “real”.

“Social” media is no longer “social”. It’s turned into just a raw media stream of our own information fetishes. The “knowledge” we garner through these channels is tailored to us in a strange, self-fulfilling way that has reached a point where it really holds us back from real growth.

Sure, we learn, we “stay in touch”, we work together on some basic level, but we do this all in a comfortable, familiar environment where we can close the door and keep things between ourselves and our select group of friends; our “tailored” media streams.

But if that trust is to be betrayed, before all else, we have to have had trust in the first place. And humans trust comfortable things so that trust comes with the territory.

So now that we are realizing this comfortable place is partly an illusion that feeds a very real greed in our minds, can we wake up and call out the uncomfortable portions of the reality behind interacting with the world in such a strange way?

My answer is: Yes, but only if we have an avenue for such discussions…

And maybe we have to return to that cave at some point so we can make those we left behind aware of the greater world outside of the shadow world they reside in…
