Update: Cheap GPS!

February 04, 2013

My last post mentioned some cheap GPS units but I didn’t include a link. Here it is! Thanks to Dangerous Prototypes for the heads up on this.

I wired up one of these this morning and, sure enough, it’s spitting out NMEA sentence information. Here’s what I’m getting back so far:

$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53
$GPVTG,,,,,,,,,N*30
$GPGGA,,,,,,0,00,99.99,,,,,,*48
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,99.99,99.99,99.99*30
$GPGSV,4,1,14,02,,,20,11,,,20,13,,,20,15,,,20*7D
$GPGSV,4,2,14,16,,,27,17,,,20,18,,,20,19,,,20*7D
$GPGSV,4,3,14,21,,,21,23,,,20,25,,,20,26,,,20*7B
$GPGSV,4,4,14,27,,,20,28,,,20*73
$GPGLL,,,,,,V,N*64

Using the link I posted above it’s obvious that the module just isn’t seeing any satellites. Without an antenna, this isn’t a surprise. But at least it’s working this much!

Now I just need to get an antenna for the thing…

All wired up…:

All wired up...
