Search: Check! UX: Fail.

January 16, 2013

Because it’s easy to get distracted, I’ve added a search function to this site! It works! Woo!

But, now, I need to face a very real fact. New visitors to this site (or any, for that matter) immediately ask the question, “What the hell am I here for?”

Addressing this issue has not ever been the real focus of this site. Sure, it was kinda there when I wrote the “About” chunk on the right, but that is vague, general, and ridiculous. No one reads “About” sections anymore!

“Good” UX design usually ends up meaning “punch the user in the face with a purpose when the page loads”. Well, maybe that’s good sometimes but if you’re not taking into consideration how people actually find your page, you’ve already lost the battle.

So, in order to help people understand what the hell is on this site, I need a clean way to tackle some of those ideas:

  1. You clicked on a link from a search engine or from some social network. What were you expecting when you got here?
  2. You just entered the URL and hit enter. Risky, but here’s some help.

Tag cloud? Fuck off. What are we, wordpress? Can’t we come up with something cleaner?

Maybe, maybe not…
