So, now that the Leap Motion #3Djam submission window is over, I figure I can do a quick shout out to a VR experience a few friends of mine worked on for the Global Game Jam back in January. It was a lot short jam, and I feel like we got a lot more accomplished in regards to an actual game than I did on my own for the Leap Motion 3D Jam.
But in any case, we did something in January that I still have not seen replicated anywhere in the VR/Leap Motion community.
Give Me a Hand was a strictly two player co-op. One person played in VR with a DK2 on as a mouse in a cage in a laboratory. The other person played by looking at the screen of the same computer and used the Leap Motion controller to help the player controlling the mouse get through a variety of puzzles.
Having a two player game set up in this fashion required a Unity Pro license and a special Unity script that allowed the person looking at the screen to see something different than the person in the DK2.
The Oculus SDK has changed a good deal since then and Unity 5 has come out as well. Both of these factors mean that the experience is no longer playable, but because this was the first code jam that I have ever taken part in, it is a good thing to look back on and think about what makes a project “solid” enough to release to the world.
I think we spent more time on tweaking the intro scene, ending credits, and other details than we did on any single “level” in the game…
It’s still available over at the Game Jam site. If I ever find a copy of Unity Pro, maybe I’ll try to give it an update for the latest SDK and Unity versions: http://globalgamejam.org/2015/games/give-me-hand
